The Business Case for TradFi Perpetuals
For an exchange, TradFi perpetuals are one of the most capital-efficient product expansions available. There is no need to build brokerage relationships, establish fiat settlement rails, or navigate the compliance overhead of running a regulated securities platform. The exchange already has the users, the liquidity infrastructure, and the USDT on-ramp. Adding TradFi perpetuals means offering those users exposure to NVIDIA earnings, gold prices, or crude oil movements without either party ever leaving the crypto ecosystem.
The revenue dynamics are compelling. TradFi perpetuals generate trading fees on assets that have deep, liquid underlying markets with genuine fundamental drivers: earnings cycles, macro data, geopolitical events. These are assets that give traders reasons to be active year-round, not just during crypto bull markets. For exchanges trying to smooth out the revenue volatility that comes with crypto-only product suites, TradFi perpetuals are a meaningful diversification.
The user acquisition angle is equally strong. Traders in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Latin America have long wanted simple access to US equities and commodities.
Traditional brokerages are not always able to cater to these traders’ specific needs: account minimums, fiat transfer requirements, limited market access, and operating hours that do not match their time zones. A crypto exchange offering TradFi perpetuals reaches these users where they already are, with a product they already understand how to trade, and without asking them to move capital out of the crypto ecosystem to do it.
Why Settling in USDT Changes Everything
The mechanism that makes all of this work is USDT settlement, and it is worth understanding why this is genuinely different from what traditional finance offers.
In conventional TradFi, settling a trade in US equities or commodities runs on a T+2 cycle. Two business days after a trade is executed, cash and securities change hands through a chain of clearinghouses, custodians, and correspondent banks. For domestic traders in the US, this is an invisible inconvenience. For a trader in Kazakhstan, Vietnam, or Nigeria, it means exposure to FX conversion costs, correspondent banking delays, and settlement risk across multiple intermediaries, assuming they can access the market at all.
USDT collapses this entirely. Settlement is on-chain, near-instant, and denominated in a dollar-pegged stablecoin that anyone with a crypto wallet already holds. There is no FX conversion, no T+2 lag, no correspondent bank in the middle, and no minimum account size gating access. A trader anywhere in the world with USDT can open a position on NVIDIA and close it with P&L settled in the same asset, in the same session, without touching the traditional financial system.
This is not just a convenience improvement. It is a structural expansion of who can participate in global asset markets. USDT turns a crypto exchange into a borderless, 24/7 access point for real-world asset exposure, with the settlement efficiency that the traditional system has never been able to offer to users outside its core markets.
For exchanges, this means the addressable market for TradFi perpetuals is not the existing base of brokerage account holders. It is the several hundred million people globally who already hold USDT and have never had a clean way to trade NVDA or gold. That is a different and much larger opportunity.
The Scale This Creates Demands Serious Wallet Infrastructure
The business case for TradFi perpetuals is clear. But the product works by holding large pools of USDT on behalf of users as margin. Every position a trader opens is backed by USDT sitting in the exchange's wallet infrastructure. As volume grows, so does the concentration of value in that wallet layer.
This is where the infrastructure decision becomes critical. An exchange running TradFi perpetuals at scale is not just operating a trading venue. It is operating a custody facility for billions of dollars in stablecoin, and the security standards that apply are institutional, not retail.
Why Building Wallet Infrastructure In-House Fails at Scale
Many exchanges default to building wallet infrastructure in-house. The reasoning is familiar: control, flexibility, cost. The outcome is usually the same.
Production-grade wallet infrastructure requires more than key management. It requires a multi-layered security architecture stress-tested against real attack vectors, a policy engine enforcing transaction rules at the protocol level rather than the application layer, regulatory compliance and licensing that holds up across jurisdictions, and a dedicated operational security team whose only job is protecting digital assets. Most exchange engineering teams are not built for this, and trying to build it while simultaneously scaling a trading product creates the exact gaps that attackers exploit.

Two Wallet Architectures Worth Understanding
Custodial wallets are the foundational model for exchange-grade asset security. A specialist wallet infrastructure provider holds and secures assets on the exchange's behalf, owning the security stack end-to-end: key management, hardware isolation, operational procedures, and regulatory compliance. The exchange integrates via API and focuses on its product.
